Yolo Food Bank required modifications inside its commercial warehouse in Woodland, CA, to improve how incoming and outgoing pallets of food and beverages are weighed. The facility processes large quantities of produce and supplies each day, and the existing floor setup made it difficult to position pallets onto heavy-duty scales without obstruction. The project involved cutting and removing sections of concrete, preparing the area for new recessed slabs, and installing reinforced concrete designed to support frequent pallet traffic. Once completed, the warehouse gained two durable recessed scale platforms that allow employees to move heavy pallets on and off the scales more efficiently during daily operations.

The warehouse team at Yolo Food Bank needed a practical solution that would allow employees to weigh pallets quickly while maintaining a smooth workflow in a high-traffic environment. The goal was to eliminate obstacles that slowed down pallet movement and to install durable scale areas capable of handling constant use throughout the workday. Key priorities for the project included:

• Creating recessed spaces for two 5 ft by 5 ft heavy-duty scales
• Allowing pallet jacks and equipment to move on and off the scales without difficulty
• Installing reinforced concrete and steel framing for long-term durability
• Completing the work on weekends to avoid interfering with daily warehouse operations

The vision was to create a functional warehouse improvement that would streamline the weighing process while supporting the demanding daily operations of the food bank.

Scope of Services Provided:

• Concrete Cutting and Removal: Used a motorized walk-behind concrete saw to cut two square sections of the existing slab before breaking and removing the concrete with heavy equipment.
• Site Preparation: Cleared rubble and debris, then graded the exposed ground to prepare the area for the recessed concrete slabs.
• Reinforcement and Formwork: Installed rebar and formwork to strengthen the new slab and provide structural support for the scale platforms.
• Concrete Installation: Poured and finished new concrete while integrating the electrical conduit needed for the scale systems.
• Steel Fabrication: Welded heavy duty 3 inch by 3 inch by 1/4 inch angle iron along the edges of each recessed opening to protect the concrete and provide additional durability.
